How this pitch accuracy test works

You hum one comfortable note, and the whole test is built around it: no “select your voice type” dropdown, no notes you can't reach. Then three short rounds: three long held notes, a five-note phrase, and a leap. Each time, the piano plays, goes quiet, and then your mic opens: the test never listens while its own audio is playing, which is why speakers genuinely work here and headphones are optional.

Every note you sing is measured in cents, hundredths of a semitone, by the same engine that powers our trainer. And then the part nobody else does: for every note that misses, the test reads the shape of your pitch over time and names the reason in plain English. Slid up into it? Scooping. Landed it and drifted down? Breath, not aim. Parked 60 cents high the whole time? Consistent aim, aimed a hair sharp. A score tells you that you missed. The shape tells you what to practise.

What do the cents mean?

A cent is one hundredth of a semitone: 100 cents between one piano key and the next. The scale your result sits on:

Why do singers miss notes? Scoop, sag, and push

Misses have shapes, and the shapes have names. Scooping, starting under the note and sliding up, is so common that voice teachers treat it as its own habit; the fix is hearing the note in your head before you make a sound. Sagging, landing the note then drifting flat as it goes on, is usually breath support running out, not bad aim. Pushing sharp tends to come from tension and reaching. And plain flat or sharp parking, steady and consistent but just off-centre, is the most fixable of all, because the aim is already stable; it's only pointed a hair wrong.

This test detects each of those patterns from the pitch curve of your actual voice, note by note. If one shape shows up again and again, that's not bad news. It's the good kind: one habit, one fix.

Can you sing in tune? What the numbers say

Almost certainly closer than you fear. Research on singing accuracy consistently finds that most people who think they “can't sing” have a working ear and an untrained voice: professionals land within about 20–25 cents of a target, trained amateurs near 50, and untrained adults average 90–130 cents, off by about a semitone, which sounds bad but responds directly to feedback practice. Only around one person in seven misses by more than a semitone, and even that group's problem is usually vocal aim, not hearing.

Why do I sing sharp?

How accurate is this pitch accuracy test?

The pitch engine measures your voice dozens of times a second using the McLeod Pitch Method, the maths serious tuning software uses. It scores each note on the median of its pitch curve, so a single blip never decides a verdict. Cents-level numbers are genuinely measured, not decorated. The honest limits are physical: a noisy room or a muted mic can make notes unreadable, in which case the test says "we couldn't hear that one" rather than guessing. And a 90-second test is a snapshot, not a career assessment. Sing it again warmed up and you'll likely do better.

Can I improve my pitch accuracy?
